Habit Holder

A friend of mine asked me to design something around a habit of mine using scrap materials. I previously had some scraps of sheet metal lying around the studio from a prevou project and I wondered how I could utilize those materials - The byproduct is something I now use on a daily basis.

Mocking it up: Metal is a hard object to play around with and decide what you want to do as you go, so I took some pieces of Bristol paper and started to play around by scoring and taking away from the material.

The Eureka Moment: While playing around with form, I also started to brainstorm what objects do I actually use on a day to day basis that I can design around. started to piece stuff together. I came up with this form and decided to test it out.

Testing: By playing around with the objects on the mockup, I figured out both the angle that I had to have the piece that holds my glasses in as well as the formal quality of how the ring holder should look like - I realized the ring holder has to curve up a little so it does not fall down.

Assembling and finishing: Since I had access to the Metal Shop at Pratt, I decided to Tig weld the pieces together and finish them by sandblasting it.

Final product in use.
